Here it is, this spring’s upfront schedule
A handy reference for when presentations take place
February 27, 2014
Today El Rey Network, the new Spanish-language cable channel created by director Robert Rodriguez, kicked off upfront season with its first-ever upfront presentation.
Over the coming weeks dozens of cable networks will unveil their programming plans for the coming year, culminating in the second week of May, when the broadcast networks introduce their fall schedules.
Things have changed over the past few years. A few of the bigger cable channels, eager to put themselves on par with broadcast, have moved their upfronts to the same week as the Big Five.
Digital video providers have added an “upfront” of their own, dubbed the newfront, that’s coordinated by the Interactive Advertising Bureau and takes place in late April and early May.
And some networks have abandoned the upfront altogether, arguing the lavish galas are outdated.
They instead opt to send sales teams and programmers around the country meeting with individual agencies. Cartoon Network, the Disney Channel and Spike, among others, have adopted this approach in recent years.
Here’s a complete guide to dates for the cable, digital and broadcast upfronts. Some networks are still setting their schedule, and this list will be updated as they firm up their dates.
Note: All upfront and newfront presentations are in New York City unless otherwise noted. Newfront presentations are denoted with a star.
