Remembering Jonathan Schell, anti-war writer

March 28, 2014

Jonathan Schell, the anti-war author and journalist who wrote for publications including The New Yorker, Newsday and The Nation, died this week at age 70 after a battle with cancer.

Schell published his first book when he was just 24, “The Village of Ben Suc,” about how U.S. forces devastated a small town in South Vietnam.

Fifteen years later he published perhaps his best-known book, “The Fate of the Earth,” a study of the nuclear arms race that first ran as a four-part series in The New Yorker, where he worked for years as a staff writer.

In 1999 New York University named “The Fate of the Earth” one of the best 100 works of journalism in the 20th century.

Schell wrote for The New Yorker from 1967 to 1987, then worked as a columnist at Newsday in New York before becoming a correspondent for The Nation.
