March 28, 2014
New York Magazine is once again atop the nominations list for the National Magazine Awards.
The publication has received a leading nine nods on the list of finalists released today.
New York is up for general excellence for general-interest magazines and for magazine of the year.
The publication won magazine of the year last year and over the years has picked up 24 National Magazine Awards, or Ellies, as they’re known within the industry, so named for the elephant-shaped statue given to winners.
It’s also up for best web site, where it has won for general excellence three times since 2006.
Three other publications, National Geographic, The New Yorker and Wired, tied for second place behind New York with six nominations each.
The New Yorker writer Sarah Stillman was nominated in the public interest category for the third straight year. She won two years ago for her story “The Invisible Army.”
One of National Geographic’s nods came for novelist Jonathan Franzen’s “Last Song,” a story entered in the public interest category as well.
Two writers received multiple nominations. Luke Mogelson was nominated in reporting for stories in The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker, while Wells Tower received nods for an essay in GQ and a short story in McSweeney’s.
Bon Appétit earned five nominations, and GQ and Harper’s Magazine both received four
