‘World News Tonight’ posts best week in nine years
June 19, 2016
ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” had its biggest win in nearly a decade last week.
“World News” averaged 8.23 million total viewers during the week ended June 12, according to Nielsen, good for first place and comfortably ahead of the 7.34 million averaged by “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt.”
ABC’s 886,000-viewer advantage was its largest lead in more than nine years, since mid-May 2007.
“World News” also finished first among viewers 25-54 (1.79 million) and 18-49 (1.29 million), the first time since last June it won a week by all three measures.
NBC finished second across the board, averaging 1.72 million 25-54s and 1.26 million 18-49s. “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was third for the week with 6.37 million total viewers, 1.40 million 25-54s and 922,000 18-49s.
For ABC, the week was a continuation of its best season in almost a decade. “World News” is having its best season in total viewers in nine years, and it’s also in the midst of its tightest race with NBC in nine years.
For the season ABC trails NBC by 211,000 total viewers, a 40 percent improvement compared to a gap of 350,000 at this time last year.
