Weekend TV: The Super Bowl edition
The top draws on broadcast and cable and in sports
February 5, 2016
FRIDAY
Best bet on broadcast: CBS, “Super Bowl’s Greatest Halftime Shows,” 9 p.m. Replays of some of the best performances in the game’s history.
Best bet on cable: Comedy Central, “Key & Peele Super Bowl Special,” 10 p.m. A re-airing of last year’s hour-long comedy special starring the comic duo, who are appearing in an ad in this year’s game.
Top sporting event: Fox Sports 1, “Soccer,” 10:30 p.m. Not football, but fútbol-The U.S. takes on Canada in a friendly match in Carson, California.
SATURDAY
Best bet on broadcast: NBC, “Saturday Night Live,” 11:30 p.m. There will no doubt be at least one Super Bowl-related skit on the episode, hosted by Bernie Sanders impersonator extraordinaire Larry David.
Best bet on cable: NFL Network, “Sound FX,” 10 p.m. A rundown of the best on-the-field sound clips from the 2015 NFL season.
Top sporting event: CBS, “NFL Honors,” 9 p.m. Conan O’Brien hosts the annual event, during which the winner of the NFL MVP award will be revealed.
SUNDAY
Best bet on broadcast: CBS, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” 10 p.m. The post-Super Bowl slot will give the talk show plenty of sampling, but will it result in a late-night ratings boost?
Best bet on cable: Animal Planet, “Puppy Bowl,” 3 p.m. See Team Ruff versus Team Fluff in the 12th annual adoption fair.
Top sporting event: CBS, “NFL Football,” 6:30 p.m. After all the hype, it’s Super Bowl 50 between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos in Santa Clara, California.
