Telemundo hops into the news app business
September 30, 2015
With a presidential election looming, Spanish-language network Telemundo is looking to deliver news where a good number of Hispanic consumers are: on mobile devices.
NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises’ Digital & Emerging Business arm and Telemundo News have teamed to create a “Noticias Telemundo” app, a Spanish-language app for mobile devices and the Apple Watch wearable device.
The app will officially roll out on Nov. 8, exactly one year before the 2016 presidential election. The company says it expects to be the only network in the U.S. to deliver real-time results on the night of the election in Spanish, though undoubtedly Univision has some new technology brewing that will roll out before then.
The move is a smart one, considering Hispanics’ affinity for mobile devices and applications. Telemundo notes that nearly 72 percent of Latinos own smartphones, about 10 percent higher than the national average, according to Nielsen.
Also, according to a recent Google survey, Hispanics are 1.5 times more likely to buy mobile apps and digital media than non-Hispanics.
In addition to live election results next year, the app will feature content from the network’s news shows, including “Un Nuevo DÃa,” “Al Rojo Vivo” and “Noticiero Telemundo.”
It will also allow for custom notifications, along with location-based news such as weather forecasts.
