Strong ‘Empire’ return lifts Fox lineup
Drama draws 4.7 in 18-49s, best for scripted broadcast show in months
March 31, 2016
“Empire” roared back onto the air last night with the best rating for any scripted series since December, when the drama went on hiatus. Its return lifted the Fox lineup to No. 1 on Wednesday.
“Empire” averaged a 4.7 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen, up from a 4.5 for its most recent episode nearly four months ago and its highest rating since Oct. 21.
The show grew from a 4.5 in its first half hour to a 4.8 in its second, dominating the 9 p.m. timeslot. Its top competitor in the hour, CBS’s “Criminal Minds” (1.8), drew less than half “Empire’s” rating.
“Empire” also gave lead-in “Rosewood” a big lift. The new drama posted a 1.4, up 40 percent from last week and its best rating since December.
Fox posted a 3.0 for the night in the demo, 67 percent ahead of No. 2 CBS with a 1.8.
Elsewhere Wednesday night, NBC’s new drama “Heartbeat” continued to post low numbers, though it didn’t lose anything from last week, drawing another 0.9 at 8 p.m.
CBS’s “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” drew a 1.4, down 12 percent from its debut two weeks ago. It won the hour in the network’s target adults 25-54 with a 1.9.
ABC aired mostly repeats Wednesday, with an original “Nashville” posting a 0.9 at 10 p.m.
