So who is Channing Dungey? Here’s the scoop.
February 19, 2016
Media buyers and planners don’t know much about the woman who has been chosen to take over as president of ABC Entertainment following Paul Lee’s resignation.
Media Life asked media people about the newly elevated executive and heard back the same variation on the answer “I know little about her.”
So here’s a crash course on her credentials and the difficult job she’s been tasked with.
Dungey takes over after reports of Lee’s disagreements with Disney-ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood on the direction of the network.
ABC in recent years has improved diversity on its airwaves with shows such as “black-ish” and “Fresh Off the Boat,” and Dungey becomes broadcast TV’s first African-American network president.
The new president has been in the ABC family for more than a decade, joining ABC Studios in the summer of 2004.
Not long after, Dungey helped get the first season of the network’s long-running medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” back on track after it stopped production when the network questioned the direction of the show.
Dungey has since reportedly maintained a strong relationship with “Grey’s” creator Shonda Rhimes, a good thing for the network considering Rhimes’ other shows “Scandal” and “How to Get Away with Murder” are among its top dramas.
Rhimes has another drama coming to the network as well, “The Catch,” which rolls out next month.
Dungey helped develop a number of shows at ABC Studios, including the “Grey’s” spinoff “Private Practice,” as well as CBS’s “Criminal Minds” and CW’s “Reaper.” In 2009 Dungey became vice president of drama development for the studio.
She moved up to executive vice president of drama development, movies and miniseries for ABC Entertainment Group in 2013.
There’s no doubt Dungey has had plenty of experience and success when it comes to drama programming. But drama is just one element of primetime broadcast TV, so it will be interesting to see the direction the network takes heading into the annual upfronts and into the 2016-17 season.
