The secrets to advertising on Snapchat
May 24, 2016
Advertisers love reaching young people, and to do so more and more are turning to Snapchat.
There’s a good reason for that. Snapchat is the mobile social app of the moment among young people, and it frequently updates its advertising options to help brands connect with that younger audience.
Just how popular is Snapchat among young people? According to a guide to advertising on Snapchat by Warc, 23 percent of teens 13-17 use Snapchat monthly, along with 37 percent of 18-24s and 26 percent of 25-34s.
By comparion, just 12 percent of 35-54s use Snapchat monthly and a measly 2 percent of those 55-plus.
Advertisers can use Snapchat in a variety of ways, including video ads within in the platform’s Live Stories, which are compilations of snaps from certain locations or events curated by Snapchat. Warc says these ads cost roughly $250,000.
For $50,000 brands can also take over a Snapchat Discover channel, which often feature a mix of branded content and news.
Warc offers 10 tips for advertisers looking to use Snapchat. Among them:
- Use a casual and relatable tone, since the platform itself is largely based on being fun and frivolous.
- Partner with users who have a lot of followers or high visibility on Snapchat.
- Measure what you can. There are limited options, but advertisers can measure things such as total views, story completion rates and the number of screenshots generated from a post.
