Another Oscars mistake: Wrong photo for ‘In Memoriam’
February 27, 2017
In the midst of the craziness surrounding the biggest flub in Oscar history, when presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented the best picture trophy to the wrong movie, comedian Billy Eichner sent out a funny tweet.
“If anyone from the In Memoriam is still alive please let us know,” the comedian joked, referring to the Academy’s annual montage of Hollywood types who’ve died over the previous year.
Eichner was kidding, of course. But it turns out, he was also prescient.
The Academy got it wrong on this one as well, though it was a much less-visible flub.
Turns out the photo that ran with one of the “In Memoriam” tributes was of the wrong person, and she is most definitely still living.
Jan not Janet
The Academy somehow ran a photo of Jan Chapman, a producer, instead of Janet Patterson, the late costume designer. Chapman and Patterson were friends, and both are Australian.
Patterson, who was nominated for four Oscars, including one for “The Piano,” died in October.
Chapman worked with Patterson on “Piano.” Patterson’s name and occupation were listed correctly in the segment.
The mix-up immediately went viral, sparking many to dub this the “fake news” Oscars in light of the night’s other major mistake.
Chapman told several media outlets she was “devastated” by the accident and sad that her late friend didn’t get her moment.
