On the rise: Digital music streaming
July 6, 2015

Little wonder Apple is pushing into the streaming business with Apple Music, after so many years of success with iTunes.
Streaming through services such as Spotify is becoming the preferred method of listening to music digitally in the U.S.
That’s according to Nielsen, which has released music sales numbers for the first half of 2015.
It found that during the six-month period ended June 28, on-demand streaming of tunes soared by 92.4 percent.
That translated into 135 billion songs being streamed across both audio and video platforms.
It also pushed up total digital music consumption by 23 percent.
Digital music sales continue to stagnate or even fall, depending on the medium. Digital album sales were flat to the same period last year, Nielsen says.
Sales of individual songs fell by 10 percent.
People are still buying CDs and vinyl, though in smaller numbers. Nielsen found combined CD and vinyl sales of albums declined by 7 percent in the first half of the year.
However, hipsters appear to be having an influence. When looking at just vinyl sales, they rose by 38 percent, and have become 9 percent of total album sales in the United States.
