NHL All-Star game shoots and scores on NBC
February 2, 2017
Even in this age of fragmentation, airing a program on broadcast rather than cable can make a big difference.
That was indeed the case for NBC’s telecast of the NHL All-Star Game on Sunday. The network averaged 2.26 million total viewers, according to Nielsen, up 42 percent from last year’s game on NBCSN.
It was up 47 percent among households with a 1.3 rating. It also came away as the most-watched NHL All-Star game since 2004.
The game’s top local market was Pittsburgh, where it averaged a 6.1 household rating. Buffalo (5.3), Minneapolis (3.7), St. Louis (3.4) and Chicago and Philadelphia (3.1 rating each) rounded out the top five.
In other sports ratings:
- Tiger Woods’ return to the PGA Tour didn’t help TV ratings last weekend. That’s mainly because he missed the cut, meaning he didn’t even play on Saturday and Sunday.
The final round of the Farmers Insurance Open on CBS averaged 3.1 million total viewers. That was actually up 35 percent from last year, but there’s a large caveat. Last year’s final round was affected by rain and came away as the event’s lowest rated final round since at least 1996, according to Sports Media Watch.
- Fox’s UFC coverage on Saturday night averaged 2.2 million total viewers, down 31 percent from its most recent event in December. That’s the second-lowest total among the 24 UFC telecasts Fox has aired since 2011.
