Networks hold strong against ‘Thursday Night Football’
ABC slips just a tenth, while NBC, Fox and Telemundo all grow
October 7, 2016
“Thursday Night Football” helped CBS double its rating among viewers 18-49 versus last week, yet the other networks were barely affected.
CBS led the night in the demo with a 2.4 average overnight rating, according to Nielsen. That was twice the 1.2 it average last week with no “Thursday Night Football.”
As always, overnight ratings reflect timeslot data and do not account for time zone differences. Also, some markets and networks experienced preemptions due to hurricane coverage.
Meanwhile, ABC finished second with a 1.5 rating among 18-49s, down just a tenth from last week’s 1.6. It also claimed the night’s most-watched non-sports show, “Grey’s Anatomy,” which averaged 8.31 million viewers in the 8 p.m. hour.
NBC finished third among 18-49s with a 1.3 rating, up a tenth from last week’s 1.2. First-year comedy “The Good Place” posted a 1.4 in the demo, up nicely from last week’s 1.2. It was the No. 2 non-sports program of the night in the demo, behind only “Grey’s.”
Fox was also up a tenth versus last week, finishing fourth with a 1.0 rating. Its new baseball series “Pitch” was flat week-to-week with a 1.0 rating, while “Rosewood” grew from a 0.8 to a 0.9.
On Spanish-language broadcast, Telemundo posted a 0.9 rating for the night with its “Latin American Music Awards” special from 8 to 11 p.m. That was up two tenths from the 0.7 the network averaged last week and good for fifth for the night.
Univision finished sixth in the demo with a 0.6 rating, even to last week. And CW was seventh with a 0.3, also flat week-to-week.
CBS also finished first for the night among households with a 5.0 average overnight rating and a 9 share. ABC was second at 4.0/7, NBC third at 3.9/7, Fox fourth at 2.4/4, Telemundo fifth at 1.2/2, Univision sixth at 0.9/2 and CW seventh at 0.6/1.
