NBCU’s new comedy channel’s not on cable
October 15, 2015
Once upon a time, this might have been a cable network. But things being the way they are these days, NBCUniversal’s latest new channel won’t be found on cable.
It’s digital.
The company is rolling out a new premium streaming site called Seeso, which will offer comedy shows and skits for a price of $3.99 per month.
It will start streaming in January, and NBCU says it will be available for trial without having to submit a credit card number initially.
The site will offer the entirety of the “Saturday Night Live” library, as well as recent NBC sitcoms such as “30 Rock” and “Parks and Recreation.”
Skits from and episodes of “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers” will also be available on the site.
Seeso will offer up to five comedy movies per month, as well as all the Monty Python movies, and a comedy concert at least once a month.
The service’s launch comes at a time when late-night hosts’ comedy channels have become extremely popular online. Fallon, for instance, has nearly 8.5 million subscribers to his “Tonight” channel on YouTube.
The price of the new offering is about half what people pay for other streaming sites, such as Netflix and Hulu, though those offer a lot more selection, without being limited to comedy.
