NASCAR wraps season on a solid note
November 23, 2016
NASCAR has had a relatively rough season in terms of TV viewership, but it did finish on a high note.
Sunday’s season-ending race from Homestead-Miami Speedway averaged 6.08 million total viewers, according to Nielsen, a season high for NBC Sports.
That was actually down 20 percent from last year, although there some caveats. First, last year’s race was pushed into primetime due to a rain delay. Also, that race had more buzz because of Jeff Gordon’s retirement.
Sunday’s race, in which Jimmie Johnson clinched his seventh title, was up 16 percent from two years ago when it was on ESPN.
In fact, outside of last year, it was the most-watched season-ending race since 2011.
The solid numbers come after what has been a mostly down season for NASCAR. Of the 29 Sprint Cup races that can be compared to last season, 21 were down in ratings and 22 were down in viewers, according to Sports Media Watch.
In other sports ratings:
- CBS’s telecast of the college football game between Missouri and Tennessee posted a 1.5 overnight household rating, down 21 percent from LSU versus Mississippi last year. That was the lowest rating for a Saturday SEC game on CBS in at least 10 years.
