In London, the case of the kids who played DJ
May 12, 2016
This is why media outlets rarely leave 9-year-olds in charge, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
British communications regulator Ofcom is investigating London Bangladeshi station Betar Bangla Radio for a Feb. 21 incident in which two 9-year-old hosts were left on the air alone while their adult producer took a prayer and bathroom break.
It wasn’t the fact that the kids were on the air alone that was the problem. The issue arose when the kids played the song “My Mind is Gone” by rapper Meek Mill, at the request of a listener.
The Sunday afternoon show typically features family friendly fare, including pop songs and jokes, but this particular song doesn’t fit the “family friendly” description. Its lyrics include 53 swear words, including 28 instances of the N word and 14 variations of the F word.
Now there’s questions over whether BBR violated decency standards.
There’s no word on whether Ofcom will punish the station for the mishap, although the group said the N word “can be considered acceptable in some very limited contexts, even when children could be listening” according to The Daily Mail.
In a statement, Ofcom said, “This programme breached broadcasting rules after it played a song which included highly offensive language, at a time when children would have been listening.
“We also found the licensee failed to take appropriate care to protect the child presenter and child guest who were left unsupervised in the studio and were therefore exposed to unsuitable language.”
