Josh Tyrangiel exiting Businessweek
October 1, 2015
The turmoil continues at Bloomberg.
This time Josh Tyrangiel, the well-respected editor of Bloomberg Businessweek, is leaving, and quickly, too. His last day will be tomorrow, he told his staff in a memo today.
“it’s time for me to take my chips off the table, reflect on my criminal good luck, and think about what comes next,” Tyrangiel said in the note. He has not yet announced his next job.
Tyrangiel will be replaced by Ellen Pollock, his deputy editor and a former editor at The Wall Street Journal before joining Businessweek in 2007. She will become the first female editor in the magazine’s 86-year history.
Tyrangiel, whose duties also included overseeing Bloomberg Markets and Bloomberg Pursuits as chief content officer of Bloomberg’s editorial department, was put under the oversight of Bloomberg editor in chief John Micklethwait early this year when he moved over from The Economist.
After that Tyrangiel’s focus, it’s been reported, changed from working on a wider range of Bloomberg products, such as TV, to focusing on print.
Though he was well regarded at Bloomberg, which has seen a lot of changes since founder Michael Bloomberg returned to the company last year after his run as mayor of New York City, Tyrangiel reportedly was unhappy with his new role.
There’s been a lot of new hirings and firings at the company. In addition to bringing on Micklethwait, Mark Halperin and John Heinemann were hired to cover politics. And in July, digital editor Joshua Topolsky was let go after clashing with Bloomberg.
Last month, up to 90 editorial jobs were cut at the company
