iHeartRadio Music Awards rock on Twitter
April 5, 2016
There isn’t much that can kill the zombies of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” on Twitter, but there’s one thing that usually does the trick: awards shows.
That was the case during the week ended April 3, when TBS’s Sunday night telecast of the iHeartRadio Music Awards generated 3.27 million total tweets, according to Nielsen Social, easily No. 1 for the week among all TV telecasts.
It helped that the telecast had a Twitter-fueled stunt for viewers, in which fan bases of various artists could compete for the title of “Best Fan Army.”
That led to TV’s most-tweeted moment of the week, when 54,800 tweets were sent at 8:59 p.m. using the hashtag #BestFanArmy as fans voted for their favorites.
The stunt wasn’t without controversy, however. Justin Bieber’s “Beliebers” won the Best Fan Army award, despite the fact that it appeared the group received the fourth-most votes on Twitter.
That led to outrage among fans of One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer and Fifth Harmony, who teamed up to get the hashtag #iFakeAwards trending.
Still, the stunt helped the awards show dominate the week on Twitter. It more than tripled the number of tweets generated by the “Walking Dead” season finale, which was No. 2 for the week with 932,000 total tweets.
