Google brings free WiFi to Chelsea
January 9, 2013
Google is moving further into internet service provider territory, following the rollout of its Kansas City project.
The search giant has set up a free WiFi network in Chelsea, where its New York headquarters are located, that is accessible to anyone in the area.
Google said the WiFi area covers between Gansevoort St. and 19 Street from 8th Avenue to the West Side Highway, along with Chelsea Triangle, 14th Street Park and Gansevoort Plaza.
It is the largest area of free WiFi in the city, and it furthers an effort by NYC to become known as the world’s biggest technology hub.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a press conference that the city hopes to offer free WiFi everywhere within a few years.
