Social Media
From Nielsen, the latest scoop on social media
January 6, 2016
Social media platforms are popular across all devices, but smartphones are people’s go-to choice for checking their social feeds.
That’s according to new research, conducted by Nielsen, which found that social networking sites reached an average of 156.5 million adults per week on smartphones in third quarter 2015, more than double the 73.4 million who accessed social sites on PCs. Another 57.8 million used tablets.
That was up 13 percent from third quarter 2014, when 138.2 million adults used social sites on smartphones.
Here are some other social networking tidbits from the Nielsen report:
- Tablets are the fastest-growing method of accessing social sites, jumping 21 percent year-to-year from 47.6 million to 57.8 million.
- Accessing social sites on PCs slipped double-digit percentages year-to-year, down 16 percent from 87.9 million to 73.4 million.
- Among ethnic groups, accessing social networks on smartphones is most common among Hispanic consumers, with 75.4 percent doing so, versus 64.5 percent of black consumers and 59.4 percent of Asians.
- Asians lead in social network usage on tablets, with 20.8 percent doing so weekly, versus 19.9 percent of African Americans and 15.4 percent of Hispanics.
