Fox wins with a better World Series
Five-game series averages a 4.1 in 18-49s, up 32 percent
November 4, 2015
This was exactly the World Series that Fox needed.
The network, which has struggled to start the season, got a huge boost from the five-game series that wrapped up Sunday, even ending NBC’s five-week win streak among adults 18-49 to start the season.
Fox became the first network besides NBC to take a week in the demo this season, averaging a 3.6 rating, 1.3 ahead of second-place NBC.
CBS was third with a 2.0, and ABC placed fourth with a 1.5.
The World Series was solely responsible for Fox’s victory.
The series, won 4-1 by the Kansas City Royals over the New York Mets, averaged a 4.2 adults 18-49 rating, up 32 percent from a 3.1 for last year’s first five games (Last year’s series went the full seven games.).
Overall, the series averaged an 8.7 household rating and 14.7 million total viewers, up 6 percent from the full seven-game series last year.
Of course, having just five games was a disadvantage as ratings tend to balloon with the sixth and seven games. But even so, this year’s World Series outrated four of the previous seven (2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014).
The big numbers were welcome for Fox. The network has gotten off to a slow start, in part due to disappointing new shows and a few veterans that are falling fast.
But as the youngest-skewing of the Big Four networks, it’s also feeling greater hurt from the growth of time-shifting and viewing on other devices, which its audiences are doing more than other networks.
When including viewership across all platforms, Fox’s fall numbers look much better and ratings for struggling shows such as “Sleepy Hollow” and “Scream Queens” look a lot more promising.
