Fox wins as ‘Empire’ declines again
Drama draws a 4.6 in 18-49s, well ahead of the competition
October 15, 2015
Last spring “Empire” rose every week among adults 18-49. Now it seems to be doing the opposite.
The Fox juggernaut fell again Wednesday night, seeing a decline for the third straight week. It’s still well ahead of the competition, and it does see big DVR gains, but the drops are worth keeping an eye on.
“Empire” averaged a 4.6 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen overnights, down 8 percent from last week.
That was “Empire’s” lowest rating since its fifth episode last spring.
All that said, “Empire’s” still killing everything else on broadcast. It was almost two full points ahead of the night’s No. 2 show, ABC’s “Modern Family,” which posted a 2.6, off a tenth from last week.
“Empire” also led Fox to an easy win on the night, though lead-in “Rosewood” was off 18 percent to a 1.4, the new drama’s lowest rating so far.
Most shows on the night held steady to last week or were down by just a tenth or two. The one exception was ABC’s “Nashville,” which grew 20 percent over last week to a 1.2 at 10 p.m.
The uptick may have been due to star Hayden Panettiere’s decision to enter treatment for postpartum depression this week, which drew a huge amount of media attention. Her character on the show has been dealing with similar issues.
CBS’s new drama “Code Black” was even to last week in 18-49s with a 1.2 and grew a tenth in the network’s target demo of 25-54s, to a 1.6.
On NBC, 10 p.m.’s “Chicago P.D.” was also even to last week in 18-49s with a 1.5, winning the hour.
Finally, Telemundo’s new telenovela “Celia,” based on the life of salsa singer Celia Cruz, continued to do well across all demos, beating Univision among 18-49s and 25-54s at 8 p.m.
