For long-running ‘Survivor,’ a title most apt
The CBS series wraps up its 31st season with steady ratings. Just amazing.
December 16, 2015
At a certain point, “Survivor” is going to go off the air. But we don’t seem any closer to that point, despite the fact that the show is now in season 31, which is absolutely geriatric for a primetime program.
“Survivor: Cambodia” wraps up its season tonight at 8 p.m. on CBS with a two-hour episode, followed by a one-hour cast reunion.
And there’s a good chance CBS will win the night in 18-49s and almost certainly among the older demos with whom the show excels.
Why the continued success?
CBS has been smart enough to keep the same winning formula in place. Though the location and the rules change slightly, the network doesn’t mess with what has worked in the past. That also includes host Jeff Probst, who has hosted every season and remains very popular.
“Survivor” has averaged a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating this season, according to Nielsen, down just a tenth from last spring. It’s also averaging 9.9 million total viewers, even to last season, which is pretty remarkable considering shows even a tenth of its age often see big declines.
Of course, it also helps that this season reunites some past contestants for an all-star-type edition, always a good way to raise ratings.
Six players are left heading into tonight’s finale, and the smart money is on Jeremy, Spencer and Tasha to make the final three.
