With football done, CBS saunters ahead
Finally, a week without any special events and CBS places first
February 18, 2016
January and February are a blur of special events on broadcast – highly rated football games and awards shows that pump up networks’ ratings and give you little feel for how the Big Four are actually performing.
But last week was the rare exception. It’s the only week in this two months without an NFL primetime game or a major awards program.
And without any specials to prop up the rest of a lineup, it became clear which network has the strongest schedule: CBS.
The season-to-date leader among adults 18-49 won the week by a small margin over No. 2 Fox, averaging a 1.6 adults 18-49 Nielsen rating to the latter’s 1.4.
ABC was just behind at 1.3. NBC, which is without top two shows “Sunday Night Football” and “The Voice,” ranked fourth at 1.2.
CBS had five of the week’s top 12 shows, more than any other network. ABC was second with four.
The difference-maker for CBS was “The Big Bang Theory.” With Fox’s top-ranked drama “Empire” on hiatus, “Bang” was easily the No. 1 show of the week with a 3.8.
That was 46 percent ahead of the No. 2 program, ABC’s “Modern Family,” which posted a 2.6. That’s a huge gap and gave CBS a significant advantage.
Of course, the network’s other advantage is always the steadiness of its shows. Even on Friday, its weakest weeknight, the network still averaged a 1.3.
The rest of the Big Four had at least one weeknight of 1.1 or below.
CBS will easily win the February sweep period in 18-49s because of the Super Bowl and Monday’s Grammy Awards, which averaged a 7.7, the best rating for any non-sports show on broadcast this season.
But even without those extras, the network’s still ahead of the competition.
***
In broadcast ratings for the week ended Feb. 14:
Among adults 18-49, CBS averaged a 1.6 rating and a 5 share, followed by Fox at 1.4/5, ABC at 1.3/4, NBC at 1.2/4, CW and Univision at 0.7/2, Telemundo at 0.4/1, ION and UniMás at 0.3/1, Estrella TV, Me-TV and Bounce TV at 0.1/0, and MundoMax, Azteca and COZI TV at 0.0/0.
Top five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): 1. CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” 3.8; 2. ABC’s “Modern Family” 2.6; Tie-3. ABC’s “The Bachelor” and Fox’s “The X-Files” 2.5; Tie-5. CBS’s “NCIS” and ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” 2.4.
Top five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 1. CBS’s “NCIS” 16.94 million; 2. CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” 16.25 million; 3. CBS’s “Republican Debate” 13.44 million; 4. CBS’s “NCIS: New Orleans” 12.57 million; 5. CBS’s “Scorpion” 11.36 million.
Show on the rise: NBC’s “Chicago P.D.,” Wednesday, 10 p.m. The procedural posted a 2.0 rating among 18-49s, up 18 percent from the previous week’s 1.7 rating.
Show on the decline: Fox’s “Lucifer,” Monday, 9 p.m. The new drama slipped 15 percent week-to-week among 18-49s, from a 2.0 rating to a 1.7.
