Finally, a Facebook ‘dislike’ button
September 16, 2015
Facebook users may soon have more options than just “like” when it comes to expressing one’s feelings about a photo of a random high school classmate’s “gifted” puppy and all the other randomness on Facebook.
This week social media site co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook is close to launching a test of another button that could be used for posts that are sad or negative, although he stopped short of calling it a “dislike” button.
“You don’t want to go through the process of sharing some moment that was important to you during your day and have someone down-vote it,” Zukerberg said at a town hall meeting about the state of the company on Tuesday.
He said it’s important to give people more options than just “like” for situations that call for it, comparing it more to an “empathy” button than a “dislike” button.
“Not every moment is a good moment, and if you are sharing something that is sad, whether it’s something in current events, like the refugees crisis that touches you, or if a family member passed away, then it may not feel comfortable to like that post,” he said.
There’s no shortage of opinions on what the new button should be called.
The technology website The Verge posted a poll asking readers what the new “not-like” button should be called, with options including “I’m sorry” button, “acknowledge” button, “I find you attractive, but have nothing of substance to say” button and “uninvited to Thanksgiving” button.
