Even with decline, ‘Empire’ dominates
Fox smash posts a 5.0 in 18-49s, nearly double No. 2 show
October 8, 2015
“Empire” continues to dominate the competition on Wednesdays, but it’s no longer posting the remarkable growth it did last spring.
In fact, last night the Fox smash saw ratings decline for the second straight week.
“Empire” drew a 5.0 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen overnights, down 7 percent from last week.
It still ranked as the night’s top program by far, nearly doubling No. 2 “Modern Family” (2.7), and it lifted Fox to another big Wednesday night victory.
Still, the drops are worth keeping an eye on. It will be interesting to see if any of them are made up through delayed viewing or online, where “Empire” draws a big audience.
“Empire” lead-in “Rosewood” also dipped for the second straight week, posting a 1.7 at 8 p.m., down 11 percent.
Wednesday was more competitive overall this week. The CW debuted its Wednesday lineup, and TBS aired the National League wild card game.
CW’s “Arrow” returned with its best premiere rating since bowing in 2012, posting a 1.1, up 10 percent from last year.
Lead-out “Supernatural” drew a solid 0.9, and the two shows combined for the network’s best Wednesday rating since December.
ABC’s “black-ish” appeared to benefit from “Empire’s” smaller audience, rising a tenth from last week to a 1.8. “Family” was down 10 percent, and earlier in the night “The Middle” (1.9) and “The Goldbergs” (2.1) also suffered drops of 14 and 13 percent, respectively.
The other networks saw declines, too. NBC’s entire lineup was off from last week, though “Chicago P.D.” still won the 10 p.m. hour comfortably with a 1.5.
And CBS’s veteran shows “Survivor” (2.0) and “Criminal Minds” (1.7) both dropped to series lows. At 10 p.m., new drama “Code Black” managed just a 1.1, though it did win the hour slightly over “Chicago” with 6.8 million viewers.
