‘Empire’ week two: Down but still strong
October 1, 2015
Even Fox’s might “Empire” is not immune from week two declines.
The hot drama saw its biggest-ever week-to-week decline Wednesday night, not that there was much competition – the show had never declined week to week before.
“Empire” averaged a 5.4 adults 18-49 rating at 9 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, down 19 percent from last week.
It still dominated the competition, nearly doubling the night’s No. 2 show, ABC’s “Modern Family,” which averaged a 2.9.
And it’s still the No. 1 show of the week so far by more than a ratings point.
Earlier in the night, Fox’s new drama “Rosewood” dropped 21 percent from last week’s premiere, to a 1.9. Even so, it remains the network’s top new show this season.
ABC’s “The Middle” was the only show to grow from last week. In fact, it was the only broadcast scripted show this fall to see a week-to-week gain, up a tenth to a 2.2.
Lead-out “The Goldbergs” dropped a tenth, to a 2.3, while “Modern Family” was off two tenths. “Black-ish” took a 25 percent hit at 9:30, posting a 1.8.
The season premiere of CBS’s “Criminal Minds” fell 26 percent from last year, though it wasn’t facing “Empire” then. It drew a 2.0.
Lead-out “Code Black” bowed to a so-so 1.6, finishing just a tenth behind NBC’s season premiere of “Chicago P.D.” in the timeslot. The show, which was expected to skew older, did win the slot in 25-54s and total viewers.
NBC’s dramas held up well, with “The Mysteries of Laura” even to last week with a 1.2 and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” down just a tenth, to a 1.7.
Finally, on the CW, the “iHeartRadio Music Festival” was even to last year with a 0.4.
