Discovery’s new TV Everywhere service
December 1, 2015
Over the past year, it seems TV Everywhere has given way to direct-to-consumer packages.
A number of cable networks, from Nickelodeon to HBO, have unbundled, offering their content to people directly over the internet, cutting out the cable or satellite middle man.
But not every network group is convinced that’s the way to go. With that in mind, Discovery Communications is doubling down on TV Everywhere.
This week it rolled out a new app that will allow people who subscribe to Discovery networks on cable or satellite to access content from any of its nine channels: Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science Channel, Velocity, Destination America, American Heroes Channel and Discovery Life.
The launch will coincide with the debut Wednesday of Discovery Channel’s “Racing Extinction,” a documentary about endangered species.
The introduction comes at a time when digital efforts have become increasingly important to networks. It’s an area where Discovery has admittedly lagged, with chief executive officer David Zaslav saying as much during a recent earnings call.
The new app will let people access live programming as well as a library of on-demand programs. People will be able to search for content by genre, too, such as history or survival. And much like they can make playlists on streaming music services, users can content their own watchlists.
