Daytona 500 delivers decent numbers for Fox
Race averages 11.9 million viewers, up 5 percent from last year
March 2, 2017
Fox received mixed results for its coverage of NASCAR’s Daytona 500 on Sunday.
The network’s telecast averaged 11.9 million total viewers, according to Nielsen, up 5 percent from last year. That was, however, down 11 percent from 13.4 million in 2015.
Further, it was the third-smallest audience for the race since 1995, according to Sports Media Watch. It only finished ahead of 2004 and last year’s race.
The race also posted a 6.6 household rating, even to last year. But that was tied for the second-lowest rating since the race began airing live in 1979.
Fox did have success with Daytona on its streaming platform, Fox Sports GO. It brought in nearly 107,000 unique streamers, up 59 percent from last year. It also generated 247,403 total streams, up 88 percent from a year ago.
In other sports ratings:
- CBS averaged 2.3 million viewers for its college basketball game between Florida and Kentucky on Saturday. That was up 75 percent from Oklahoma versus Texas on the same day last year. It was also the No. 8 college basketball game this season in total viewers, regardless of network.
- On Saturday night NBC averaged 1.9 million viewers for its NHL Stadium Series game between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. That was up 13 percent from last year’s outdoor primetime game, according to SMW.
It was also the most-watched regular season NHL game in three years, not counting Winter Classic games.
