CBS renews a slew of shows, with a few missing
Network bringing back 18 programs next season, including five new ones
March 24, 2017
CBS is known for its stability, and today the network made another commitment to stability, renewing a slew of shows for next season, including five of its new programs.
Still, what’s notable isn’t the shows that made the cut but rather the ones that didn’t.
Conspicuously absent from that list of renewals: veteran dramas “Criminal Minds” and “Elementary” as well as comedy “2 Broke Girls.” The second-year spinoff “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” didn’t get a renewal either.
That’s not to say that the shows won’t return. There are still six weeks before the networks hold their upfront presentations, and sometimes things such as cast contracts or studio concerns can hold up renewals.
But considering those programs are on the bubble, with notable ratings declines this season, it’s certainly not a good sign.
New comedy “The Great Indoors” and third-year sitcom “The Odd Couple” were also left off the list of renewals. That’s not surprising. Both will probably be canceled, with “Couple” posting dismal numbers in an abbreviated run and “Indoors” failing to capitalize on its big lead-in from “The Big Bang Theory.”
“Code Black” also missed the list, but it was a late pick up last year and will likely be the same this year, depending on how “Borders’” ratings hold up. The two shows share the same timeslot, with “Black” there in the fall and “Borders” in the spring.
Otherwise, CBS’s list of renewals included few surprises. “Bang” and “NCIS,” the network’s top two programs in total viewers and the adult demos, had already been renewed.
New shows receiving pickups include “Bull,” “Man With a Plan,” “Kevin Can Wait” and “Macgyver.” “Superior Donuts” was also renewed, a bit of a surprise since its ratings are low. But it’s also one of the network’s few shows with a black star, and the network has been criticized for its lack of diversity.
“The Amazing Race” didn’t make the list, either, but that’s likely because CBS and its producers are still squabbling over whether to air one or two seasons per year.
Here’s the complete list of CBS renewals:
“The Big Bang Theory”
“Blue Bloods”
“Bull”
“Hawaii Five-0”
“Kevin Can Wait”
“Life in Pieces”
“Macgyver”
“Madam Secretary”
“Man With a Plan”
“Mom”
“NCIS”
“NCIS: Los Angeles”
“NCIS: New Orleans”
“Scorpion”
“Superior Donuts”
“Survivor”
“48 Hours”
“60 Minutes”
