For ‘The Catch,’ a big shift in focus to romance
Gone is the 'case of the week' aspect of the ABC drama, back for season two
March 9, 2017
Let’s be honest: If “The Catch” were produced by anyone other than MVP super producer Shonda Rhimes, the show would have been canceled last season.
But Rhimes’ name carries a huge amount of weight at ABC, and so the drama returns tonight at 10 p.m. for a second season, with a new focus and new hopes for better ratings.
“Catch” follows Alice, a private investigator who gets played by a slick con man she spent all of last season trying to nab. In season one, in addition to Alice tracking her former fiancé, Benjamin, she also dealt with a case of the week she was trying to solve.
Season two hits the reset button.
The format shifts from mystery to romantic comedy, with more emphasis on the star-crossed lovers at the center of the show, played by Mireille Enos and Peter Krause.
The hope is that the lighter vibe will attract more viewers, after season one struggled.
“Catch” averaged just a 1.0 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day-DVR-playback numbers. That made it one of the lowest-rated programs on any network to get a second season.
It also makes it a weak link in ABC’s otherwise strong Thursday lineup, which features two other Rhimes shows, “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal.”
