Cable overnights: ‘Greenleaf’ grows to OWN record
August 11, 2016
“Greenleaf” sure didn’t fall prey to the Olympics ratings drain many other cable shows have experiences this week.
In fact, the Oprah Winfrey Network drama actually set a new record Wednesday night.
The show drew 2.3 million total viewers, according to Nielsen, becoming the most-watched program ever on a Wednesday for five-year-old OWN.
That was up 18 percent from its previous Wednesday night average (the show premiered on a Tuesday earlier this summer before moving to its regular Wednesday slot).
The show was the No. 1 program among women Wednesday on cable, and it averaged a 1.8 among women 25-54, up 13 percent from last week.
The program, about a Southern megachurch, is the top TV new series this summer among black viewers.
Elsewhere on Wednesday night
NBCSN’s Olympics coverage drew a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating, the best for any original program of the night on cable.
USA’s “Mr. Robot” continues to post low ratings, drawing another 0.2 in the demo. It will be interesting to see how the network decides to proceed with the critically lauded drama.
