A media buyer’s primer to the Democratic convention
July 26, 2016
A week after the Republicans took center stage in Cleveland, the Democratic National Convention kicked off on Monday in Philadelphia.
C-SPAN will once again feature extensive non-biased coverage. The network will air live footage from the convention from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day, with no talking heads to bog things down.
Here is a look at the other media outlets covering this year’s DNC.
Broadcast networks
Just like last week, the Big Three broadcast networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) will each devote the 10 p.m. hour to news coverage of the convention. As we saw with the RNC, speeches could very well run late and cause the networks to extend their coverage beyond 11 p.m.
Each will also have DNC news on their morning and evening news shows.
PBS plans to air coverage throughout the primetime hours.
Cable news networks
CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC will each once again have around-the-clock coverage of the convention. The major speeches will air live, and the networks’ extensive panels will weigh in with comments. Fusion, CNBC, Fox Business Channel and HLN will also have coverage, though not as extensive as the three main cable news networks.
Spanish-language
Univision will join the Big Three broadcast networks with Democratic convention coverage in the 10 p.m. hour on Thursday, when Hillary Clinton will speak. Both Univision and Telemundo will also feature DNC coverage during their news programs throughout the day.
In fact, Telemundo on Monday evening will air a Spanish-language interview with vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine.
Late-night
TBS’s “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” will air new DNC episodes on Monday and Wednesday night. HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” will again air live specials at 11 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. CBS’s “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will be live Monday through Thursday. Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” will tape episodes from Philly, with a live airing on Thursday. Finally, NBC’s “Late Night” will also air live on Thursday.
Streaming/online
Just like last week, the broadcast networks, cable news networks and C-SPAN all plan to stream the convention in its entirety, as will Univision and Fusion. The official DNC YouTube page will also feature a live stream.
Twitter will stream coverage from CBS, while ABC’s coverage will appear on Facebook.
NPR will also be on hand for nightly streaming coverage, along with its nightly live radio coverage
Politico will continue its eight-part video series looking at the history of the U.S. political conventions.
And The Washington Post will have Democratic convention news and information available on Alexa-enabled devices, such as Amazon Echo, Fire TV, Amazon Tap and Echo Dot. The system will provide real-time election results to users in November as well.
