After broadcast and SVOD, Marvel eyes cable
FX's 'Legion' follows a mutant struggling to realize and harness his powers
February 8, 2017
Is it still news when Marvel launches yet another TV show? Yes, when that show is on cable.
Tonight at 10 p.m., “Legion” debuts on FX. It’s set in the same universe as the “X-Men,” and it follows a mutant, David, who has schizophrenia and doesn’t know what his own powers are.
A cable program marks a first for Marvel, which also has a booming movie business that the TV shows have yet to match in terms of popularity or revenue generation.
On broadcast, there are “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and the canceled “Marvel’s Agent Carter.” ABC is also mulling a “S.H.I.E.L.D.” spinoff despite major ratings declines by the parent program. And Fox is moving forward with a pilot for an “X-Men” show.
On SVOD, Netflix has five Marvel dramas either airing or in the works; the latest, “Iron Fist,” bows March 17, and the stars of “Fist,” “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones” and “Luke Cage” will team up in the upcoming “The Defenders.” Hulu, meanwhile, has another Marvel show in the works.
Why was cable so late to the Marvel party? In many ways, comic book programs are better suited to other platforms.
SVOD’s young audience of early adopters is exactly the target demo for comic fans. And broadcast can offer a wider audience, appropriate for a studio that regularly produces the year’s top-grossing movies.
As for what sort of numbers “Legion” might pull, for comparison, another recently bowed drama on the network, “Taboo,” is averaging a 0.5 adults 18-49 Nielsen rating.
