Big stink over ‘View’ nursing comments
September 17, 2015
If you’re friends with any nurses on Facebook or follow them on Twitter, you’ve probably noticed something this week: They are super, super ticked off at “The View.”
And advertisers are taking notice. Two have yanked their ads from the ABC daytime show since Monday.
The controversy began that day, when the panelists were discussing the Miss America pageant from the night before.
One of the contestants, Kelly Johnson (Miss Colorado), gave a monologue about her experience as a nurse rather than do a traditional talent such as singing or piano playing. She wore scrubs and a stethoscope.
“View” co-hosts Joy Behar and Michelle Collins poked fun at the monologue.
“She came out in a nurse’s uniform and basically read her emails out loud and, shockingly, did not win,” Collins said. Behar pondered whether Johnson had borrowed her stethoscope from a doctor.
Nurses were enraged. They took to social media with the hashtag #NursesUnite and sent letters to the show.
Advertisers were listening. Johnson & Johnson and Eggland’s Best both yanked their ads.
“We disagree with recent comments on daytime television about the nursing profession and we have paused our advertising accordingly,” Johnson & Johnson said in a statement. “We’re committed to raising the level of awareness about the skill and knowledge that the profession requires.”
The “View” hosts quickly walked back on their comments, insisting on Wednesday’s show that they love nurses.
