Apple market share rises as iPhone 7 looms
September 6, 2016
Apple has some momentum heading into Wednesday’s expected reveal of its new iPhone 7 models.
Apple accounted to 31.3 percent of smartphone sales during the three months ended July 31, according to Kantar Media. That was a 1.2 percentage point increase versus the same period last year.
Among individual devices, Apple’s iPhone 6s is No. 1 with an 11 percent share. Even the original iPhone 6, which Kantar says is approaching the end of its life cycle, remains the sixth best-selling phone in the U.S. with a 4.1 percent share.
There seems to be a good chance owners of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus will upgrade to an iPhone 7 model. According to a June survey from Kantar, 29 percent of 6/6 Plus owners said they plan to change their device within a year.
Kantar says battery life is the most important factor for those looking to potentially upgrade, with 75 percent saying so. The quality of the camera (63 percent) and storage capacity (53 percent) were also important factors.
Android devices slip
Meanwhile, Android phones are on the decline. During the period measured, Android devices accounted for 65 percent of smartphone sales, down 0.6 percentage points from last year.
