Amazon chops Prime pricing
September 23, 2015
Amazon’s drama “Transparent” won five Emmys on Sunday, and now the streaming service is celebrating by trying to entice more people to watch the show.
It’s giving non-subscribers to Amazon Prime, which gives people access to its original productions, a discount.
For a 24-hour period beginning at midnight on Sept. 25, Amazon Prime memberships will be available for a price of $67, about a third off its normal $99 price for an annual subscription.
The offer is only available to new subscribers, but could come in handy with the holidays right around the corner. In addition to the streaming video service, Amazon Prime includes a number of other benefits, such as free two-day shipping on a large number of items on the company’s retail site.
It also now includes six months free digital access to The Washington Post, the newspaper owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
The $67 price is in honor of the 67th Primetime Emmys, where “Transparent” did very well.
Series star Jeffrey Tambor won the award for outstanding lead actor in a comedy, and creator Jill Soloway won for outstanding directing for a comedy series.
The series also won for outstanding main title theme music, outstanding guest actor in a comedy (Bradley Whitford), and outstanding costumes for a contemporary series, limited series or movie.
