21st Century Fox to Gretchen Carlson: Uh, sorry
September 6, 2016
Everyone’s been expecting this moment since about mid-July, when it became clear that 21st Century Fox was not going to stand behind Roger Ailes amidst a growing number of sexual harassment allegations against him.
The company has settled the lawsuit by former Fox News anchor Gretchen that sparked the scandal, which led to Ailes’ resignation.
Carlson claimed Ailes had harassed her during a long tenure at Fox News Channel, which Ailes founded and 21st Century Fox owns.
She will receive $20 million, and she got an apology from the FNC parent, though not from Ailes himself.
“We sincerely regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect and dignity that she and all of our colleagues deserve,” said the company in a statement released Tuesday morning.
When the suit was filed, Ailes dismissed the allegations as the petty whining of an employee who’d been fired for her show’s low ratings.
But it quickly became apparent that Carlson was just the beginning. More women came forward at the network, reportedly including star host Megyn Kelly, and The New York Times reports that FNC has settled with two other women over Ailes allegations as well.
Carlson, who reportedly taped several of her encounters with Ailes, prompting 21st Century Fox to decide going to court would be imprudent, said in a statement she’s ready to move on and “redouble my efforts to empower women in the workplace.”
